Wantage Dining
Eat well. Feel at home.
For more than 110 years, Wantage Dining has been at the heart of hall life. As the University’s oldest continuously operating dining hall, it combines a proud heritage with a fresh, welcoming place to eat, take a break and connect with other students.
Located within Wantage Hall, our 215-seat dining room makes it easy to enjoy good food close to home.
Fresh food, plenty of choice
Our in-house chefs create varied, balanced menus designed for busy student life. Expect comforting favourites, globally inspired dishes, colourful salads, plant-forward choices and plenty more—all made with great ingredients and great flavour in mind.
Menus change regularly, so there is always something new to try.
Allergen-friendly dining at Wantage
From September 2026, Wantage Dining will offer an allergen-friendly menu, made using ingredients that do not declare—or carry a “may contain” statement for—any of the 14 UK-regulated allergens. Wantage is ring-fenced from the rest of our Dining Service, so all dishes are made on-site, at Wantage with no use of other kitchens that handle allergens.
This will provide a distinctive, inclusive dining option for students whose dietary needs require additional consideration, while continuing to serve delicious, nutritionally balanced food for everyone, backed by the University’s academic expertise in Food and Sciences.
Over the next 12 year, we will complete the formal certification process and continue to strengthen our supply chain and operating model. We are work closely with Sysco, the world’s largest food service distributor, our core food supplier for Wantage, to ensure this approach is robust from ingredient sourcing through to service. Their scale ensures we have a robust supply chain. There always remains a residual risk of undeclared allergens in products, and this is managed through a cautious approach avoiding of ingredients known to be of higher risk of contamination, for example, using whole garlic, rather than ground garlic which has seen issues with peanut contamination.
Until certification is complete, we will not make any formal “free-from” claims. If you have a diagnosed food allergy or another dietary requirement, please contact us before arrival so we can discuss how we can best support you.
Helping us keep the dining room safe
To protect the integrity of this approach, outside food, drink, cups and bottles must not be brought into the Dining Room or Kitchen areas.
Eat your way across campus
Wantage residents can enjoy dining at Wantage while still having the freedom to explore the University’s wider range of cafés, restaurants and food outlets across campus.
